Pump Nozzle Loading

PUMP NOZZLE LOADING

High nozzle loads occur when forces and moments exerted by the connected piping exceed the pump's design limits. These loads can lead to mechanical stress, misalignment, vibration, and premature failure.

The primary cause of abnormal nozzle loading is thermal expansion, poor piping support, pipe misalignment and dynamic/hydraulic forces.

SUPPORTING BOLT TO MINIMIZE PIPEWORK EFFORTS ON THE PUMP FLANGE

A suction diffuser with an adjustable support helps mitigate suction-side vertical forces and thermal expansion effects by providing controlled restraint of the piping. While the support bolt is not intended to carry the full static weight of the suction line, it can absorb intermittent axial forces (e.g., from thermal cycling or vibration), preventing their transfer to the pump nozzle.
